Summer is here! Join our 8-week session for an exciting martial arts program to build confidence, discipline, focus, and fitness in a fun and supportive environment!
Summer Session
Studies show that capoeira enhances coordination and executive functions (e.g. focused attention, regulating emotions). Our experienced instructors will guide students through age-appropriate martial arts techniques, games, and activities that promote physical and mental growth.
Capoeira helps children facilitate cooperative play, teaches them to play traditional percussion instruments, and sing in Portuguese. The practice of capoeira promotes physical, cognitive, motor and affective-social skills, making it a rich and fantastic activity that meets the needs of children.
What will the kids learn?
We will be teaching various capoeira songs and practicing the concept of “call and response”. The students will learn how to respond within capoeira songs. The songs are taught in Brazilian-Portuguese. The students will learn the Brazilian-Portuguese translation into English in order to understand the song context.
Students will learn capoeira movements of kicks, escapes, and acrobatics through the Rise Training capoeira curriculum. The students will learn the concept of playing capoeira games within a roda and their role within the roda. Students will learn to play capoeira instruments to capoeira music through instruction. Students will learn capoeira history through class discussion.

What is Capoeira?
Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that was born from slavery and was passed on in spite of being banned in Brazil. Capoeira embodies the communities of African and Indigenous People of Brazil who fought together for a better life. Capoeira is a communal art form meant to uplift everyone.
In the early 20th century, capoeira was illegal to be practiced in public. The Brazilian government later legalized the martial art and recognized capoeira for its value. Capoeiristas from Brazil brought the art form to the United States in the late 1970s resulting in capoeira schools all over the world. Not only is it used as a martial art, capoeira is also used in some parts of the world as a tool for therapy and helping those with PTSD.
Capoeira is a cultural expression that strengthens the body with kicks, defensive moves, and acrobatics. Capoeira has a balance of dance, music, and movement. It serves as a gathering point for individuals to interact with and unite their
communities through movement and music.
Capoeira music is played with live instruments. The songs are sung in Brazilian-Portuguese and students are given the opportunity to learn more about a culture through that language. Capoeira songs can be made of simple phrases.
Some songs pass on legends of historical events or individuals.
