This Housing Board was created as an optional tool to support Batizado weekend housing. This is a self-service community resource for hosts and guests. Rise/Gingarte event facilitators are not matching guests with hosts or coordinating housing arrangements.

MESTRE LOBINHO

Fabio Cosmo da Cunha (Mestre Lobinho) began learning Capoeira in 1998 in São Paulo, Brazil. At 8 years old, Lobinho was introduced to Capoeira and his teacher, Mestre Coruja, through a social program led by a non-profit in Brazil to help underprivileged kids in the local community.

At only 16 years old, Lobinho was already helping teach classes to kids and adults. At 18 years old, Lobinho started developing his own work in preschools and other institutions, making Capoeira his full-time job. He has taught classes for kids starting at age 2, teenagers, adults, elders, and also persons with disabilities, in an attempt to democratize access to Capoeira for people of different backgrounds.

Lobinho showed dedication and consistency, becoming in 2019 a Capoeira master (Mestre) recognized by his teacher and his community. For Lobinho, his life path in Capoeira is an example of the opportunities and unique benefits that this Afro-Brazilian art form can offer to people. For that reason, Lobinho has always believed in Capoeira as a career and philosophy of life, and has worked restlessly to offer the same to others.

Today, with over twenty years of teaching experience and extensive knowledge, Lobinho is an ambassador of different Afro-Brazilian cultural expressions related to Capoeira in the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti areas of Michigan, where he has taught for more than ten years.

MESTRE MORCEGO

Mestre Morcego of Estrela Preta CapoeiraDC first encountered capoeira in 1998 at one of its birthplaces: Salvador, Bahia, a city in Northeast Brazil known for its Afro Brazilian history, culture and religiosity. Although he was originally following a passion for soccer, Mestre Morcego returned to Washington with a desire to learn more, captivated by both the art form and its complex past.

After returning to D.C. from Salvador, Morcego trained under several mestres. In 2002, Morcego and seven other local capoeiristas, including his now wife, Aysha Corbett (Professora Borboleta), founded CapoeiraDC, an offshoot of Capoeira Malês headquartered in Seattle. After two decades, Morcego and Borboleta separated from the group in 2022 to independently establish The Capoeira Spot.
Today, Mestre Morcego is the executive director of both organizations. After years of operating under the name The Capoeira Spot, the nonprofit has been renamed to Estrela Preta CapoeiraDC.

CONTRAMESTRE PANTERA

Contra-Mestre Pantera (Jacob Brooks El) a Chicago native, embarked on his Capoeira journey in 2003. After dedicated years of learning from diverse teachers, he became a member of Grupo Unidade Capoeira, an affiliate school of Associação Santista de Capoeira Areia Branca (ASCAB). Guided by the wisdom of Mestre Dentista and Mestre Doutor, CM Pantera established Grupo Pantera Capoeira/ASCAB in 2019 in Madison, WI.

DILL COSTA

Dill Costa is a highly acclaimed Rio de Janeiro-born vocalist, dancer, and actress who brings the authentic rhythms of Brazil to Chicago. She performs Carnaval music, leads musical productions, and teaches Brazilian dance. A former Globo TV actress for 25 years, she has worked with major samba groups and created shows like The Heart Beat of Brasil and Minha Alma é Ancestral. She has held many titles in samba schools including ‘Queen of the Percussion Section’. She has been an instructor of Brazilian regional dance forms for many years.

In 2018, Dill founded the Dill Costa Dance Group Brazilian Swing (DDG) in Chicago to explore and perform the history and ancestry of samba. Besides samba, Dill is an expert in jazz, tap, modern, and folk dance of Brazil.

Since relocating to Chicago in 2003, Dill has dedicated herself to music, and performs at local music venues with her ensemble, the Dill Costa Quartet, and the Brazilian jazz quintet, Bossa Tres, singing the classics of Brazilian samba, bossa nova, and Brazilian jazz and pop. Her repertoire ranges from classic 1940’s era sambas of Ary Barroso and Noel Rosa, to the cool, 1960’s bossa nova hits of Antonio Carlos Jobim, to the modern Brazilian pop of Caetano Veloso and Carlinhos Brown.

INSTRUCTOR AMANSU 'TEMPERO' EASON

Amansu Eason is a dancer, choreographer and teacher of African/Diaspora dance. He is a certified instructor in the Katherine Dunham Technique and offers classes in West African, Afro Caribbean as well as his exploration of “Afro Grooves.”

Eason serves on the technique committee for the Institute for Dunham Certification. He was the guest instructor for Edna Manley School of Dance summer intensive in Kingston, Jamaica and was invited to give a dance workshop series at the direct request of the Ga’ aton Kibbutz dance commune in Israel.

Eason began training at an early age in ballet, jazz, tap, modern, and musical theater. He also received extensive training in West African folklore and after high school began touring with Muntu Dance Theater of Chicago, the oldest traditional African Dance Company in the US. In the 18 years he performed with Muntu, Eason was lead dancer, rehearsal director, assistant artistic director and choreographer. His tribute to Michael Jackson won two Black Excellence Awards for Best Choreography in Chicago. Amansu has performed with and opened for pop artists Ben Harper, Omarion and Mary Mary, and has been a soloist for Chris Walker and a guest artist with Kashe Dance Company.
