HAND-CRAFTED BERIMBAU BY MESTRE NENEL available for PURCHASE
This berimbau, or "urucungo," was hand-crafted by Mestre Nenel, son of Mestre Bimba and founder of the school Filhos de Bimba Escola de Capoeira.
Mestre Nenel's berimbaus are always of the best quality, and he has taken the lessons he learned directly from his father, as well as his continued research into all aspects of Capoeira Regional, and put them into practice with his creations. These berimbaus end in a point to avoid any interference with the arame and the verga, and laquered to promote longevity without any distortion of sound. The berimbau is light and meant to have a lower timbre to be able to carry a roda with a single instrument. The cabaça atttachment is reinforced with leather, and the berimbau is notched for easy tuning, and signed and dated by Mestre Nenel. Inscription: "Nenel, 2023" This hand-crafted berimbau is available for purchase at our Batizado event for $200. |
PROFESSORA BORBOLETA
Professora Borboleta started capoeira in California under the supervision of Professor Gui, and began teaching in his academy in 2007. In 2010, upon moving to Arkansas, she opened her first independent space for sharing the Afro-Brazilian arts. Nearly 10 years into her capoeira journey, Professora Borboleta began visiting the school Filhos de Bimba in 2012, at the suggestion of her first teacher, who had since retired from capoeira. After spending over 6 months in residence in Salvador, in 2014 she officially joined the school under the supervision of Mestre Nenel.
In this same year, she moved to Texas, and opened Fort Worth Capoeira. Mestre Nenel visited Fort Worth for the first time in 2017, at which point Fort Worth Capoeira offically became a Filhos de Bimba núcleo. In 2018, Borboleta completed her studies under the supervision of Mestre Nenel, and was recognized in a tradional formatura, receiving her lenço azul and medalha, and the honor of joining the ranks of Filhos de Bimba formados/as.
Since 2014, her programs in the DFW area have grown, and are now a regular feature of the Fort Worth ISD After School programs and other community programs, including partnerships with the local museums, community colleges, and universities.

JOSHLEAN FAIR
Joshlean Fair is a native of Chicago and trained for 10 years with the Percussion Scholarship Program. This technical musical training, and her familial roots in jazz and dance, instilled a deep appreciation for the arts across the Diaspora.
During her graduate studies, diving into the Tropicália era of music in Brazil was not only an outlet from her studies but also inspired a desire to study Brazilian dance. Upon returning to Chicago, her love for samba was birthed and cemented under the tutelage of Dill Costa at the Old Town School of Folk Music. Joshlean has been studying Samba and Brazilian folk dance with Dill Costa for 4 years now, and through her, has also studied with numerous professional Brazilian artists, such as Pablo Guerreiro, and with the International Samba Congress.
Joshlean has also had the privilege to parade three times at Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro with prestigious samba schools such as Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel, Unidos de Padre Miguel, and as a solo-style dancer, or Musa, with União de Jacarepaguá.
Joshlean performs at various venues and events throughout Chicago with groups such as Gingarte Capoeira, Bloco Maximo, and the Dill Costa Dance Group. She currently teaches Samba at Rise Training Academy.
Samba has been a symbol of new beginnings for Joshlean, and a reminder that we all are always on the brink of a new beginning of self-discovery, expression, and service. Her hopes are to continue to study, teach, and honor the art of samba and share this dance form across Chicago and beyond.
